BY AIR (Malaga Costa Del Sol Airport or Gibraltar International Airport)
There are two important international airports which are less than an hour away by road:
Both airports guarantee direct connections to the principal cities of Spain, Europe, North Africa and the United States.
Getting from the Malaga Costa Del Sol Airport:
There is a non-stop bus which goes into Marbella Bus Station or you can opt for the number C19 which goes into Malaga City with a number of stops on the way. You will find the bus stop outside T3 arrivals on the roadside where there are a couple of shelters with seats. You will also see a ticket office in the left hand corner of the arrivals forecourt where you purchase your tickets for the journey. The Airport Bus goes direct to Marbella Bus Station via the fast Toll Road. The journey time is 45 minutes.
Advantages: It is good value for money, and to give you some idea with a cost comparison: the bus (€8.30) and taxi into Puerto Banus from Marbella Bus Station (€14) is still a lot cheaper than the €70 taxi fare if there are less than four of you travelling in the party.
Disadvantages: In the summer the buses are more frequent but you may not get on as they can get very busy. So you need to make sure you join the queue as soon as you have your tickets and not wait until the last minute.
Cost: €8.30 one way
There are 23 companies but only nine of them are located in terminal buildings 2 and 3, with parking on floor 1 of P2, and floors 1 and 2 of P1. Access to the desks in Terminal 2 is via a ramp in the arrivals hall. You will notice large signs that point you to a ramp that takes you downstairs to where the offices are based. The desks are located in the ground floor arrivals area of Terminal 3. Once you have picked up your keys a member of staff will inform you on which level of the car park and bay number you can find your car. Both car parks are connected to Terminal 3 through the transportation hub. The offsite companies are mainly located on Avenida Garcia Morato running parallel to the airport and you will have to take a courtesy bus to get to them.
Some local advice to avoid the queues at the desks (especially during the summer months): if there is more than one of you in the party and you have to wait to collect hold baggage, then the non-driver should wait to collect the bags from the carousel while the driver goes on ahead to avoid the inevitable rush when other passengers have collected their luggage and head for the desks. When making the booking take into account the number of passengers and amount of luggage you will have to transport, as there is nothing worse than not having enough space and everyone feeling camped and uncomfortable.
Advantages: Car hire is a very competitive business and well worth shopping around to see what deals are being offered as you can often make some great savings. Try to book your car as far in advance as you can as this often secures the best deal and also ensures that you get the make and model of vehicle that you require.
Disadvantages: You may not be used to driving in Spain. The traffic in Malaga, especially during the summer months, can be bad at almost any time of day or night.
Taxis are located outside the arrivals hall of T3. Do not accept offers from drivers inside the terminal, since these are often illegal drivers and you will almost certainly get ripped off. Depending on traffic conditions, expect to pay up to €90 to Puerto Banus, you should try and ask the driver for a quote for the journey before setting off, so make sure you do this to avoid paying too much. There are many supplements to the basic fare. These include:
Rate 1: weekdays between 06.00 and 22.00: per kilometre €0.84; waiting time per hour €18.47; minimum service starting at the airport €15.21.
Rate 2: weekdays from 22:00 to 06:00, Saturdays and holidays: per kilometre €1.03; waiting time per hour €23.09; minimum service starting at the airport €19.01.
Supplements to/from airport: €5.50; night-time (0:00 to 6:00), €2; origin/destination Levante port, €1; packages or suitcases larger than 60 cm, €0.45. During the August Festival and Holy Week, rate 2 will be applied.
To telephone the taxi companies that operate from the airport the numbers are Radiotaxi: 0034 952 040 804. Unitaxi: 0034 952 333 333
Always ask for a receipt at the end of your journey in case the fare comes into dispute.
Advantages: Convenient, door-to-door service.
Disadvantages: Not for shoestring budgets. If you’re watching your money, we advise you travel by bus.
Cost: 75-90 euros to Puerto Banús.
