Final Table
Final Table
Rakesh Paul Gupta – 958,000
Based in Glasgow, Rakesh Paul Gupta travels the country with a select band of poker enthusiast friends looking for a challenge at the felt. He’s played poker for around five years, at one point favouring the online game but has since turned his focus onto live tournaments, which helps to keep the peace at home, he says! This is his first UKIPT appearance, but having shot straight to the final table he’s confident in his potential to capture the title; the £67,000 first prize would go some way towards justifying his weekend away playing poker in Newcastle.
James Morris – 926,000
James Morris enjoys poker notching up several cashes around the country over the last few years where he has scheduled his play to fit around a busy work schedule – his day job being in drug and alcohol treatment strategy. He’s played UKIPT events before (both in Nottingham) but this is his first cash, and will be for at least £6,510. An experienced live player, Morris admits, however, that some good fortune propelled him to his final table seat: “When I was moved I just won all these ridiculous races. Tomorrow I am going to focus on playing better.” His 6 years of experience will be of use at the final and should he win the title or not he admits: “I’d like to have more time to play!”
Barry Foley – 446,000
Barry Foley, 43, has been playing poker for over 10 years and has made the step up to larger tournaments such as the UKIPT in recent years. Unable to make it to UKIPT Cork, Foley took time off work for this main event and headed to Newcastle from Portlaw, County Waterford for the weekend. He prefers live play to online as he rates that live reads are an important part of his game. That said he does admit that as the final table short stack he needs to, “Step up a gear and play more aggressively.” A double up will bring him back into the pack.
Tadhg Ryan – 836,000
Tadhg Ryan has played more UKIPT events than anyone else at the final table – with “five or six” under his belt he is happily optimistic despite heading to the final table with the second shortest stack. The 25-year old from Cork also plays games a little more physically demanding than poker and is bearing the wounds at the table having played with his hand in a cast after breaking two fingers playing hurling. His advice to himself is to be patient, and if he takes down the title, he’s off: “I’m going to Australia!”
Jonathan Gawith – 898,000
Jonathan Gawith, 38, hails from Carlisle and has been playing poker for nine years. Entry to this, his first UKIPT Main Event, came after a late-stage satellite win on Sunday, and will result in his first cash being a blue ribbon final table appearance. He intends to rejoin the UKIPT at further legs should he take down a major prize, and intends to “take it as it comes and see what happens tomorrow.”
Tim Slater – 858,000
Tim Slater, 36, has been a regular face on the UKIPT this season having had solid attempts in the the Cork, Manchester and Nottingham main events. Slater has both Las Vegas as well as more UK events in his sights if the final table goes his way. His advice is simple, “Stop trying to be too clever. Good solid poker can win tournaments.” Or, as he put it more succinctly, “tight is right.”
Raj Verma – 1,343,000
Raj Verma is no stranger to the UKIPT tournament environment having played three main events with his best result so far being an 19th place finish in Coventry for £1,450. Verma, 31, is from Birmingham but regularly makes trips the length and breadth of country for live poker. He knows he’s in good shape chip-wise with the second biggest stack and is confident that if he continues to to play his game in the same vein he will reap results. Verma heads to Las Vegas in a few weeks and a win here would mean more live poker to follow, but he’s only thinking about the final table for the moment, planning most sensibly to “get some sleep tonight so I feel fresh in the morning.” Wise strategy.
Richard Sinclair – 1,938,000
The runaway success story of Day 3 is Richard Sinclair, who rose to the chip lead in the earlier levels of the day and refused to let it go – increasing it seemingly level on level throughout the day. His steamrolling slowed down when he lost a 600,000 pot to James Morris, who bust in 14th, but picked up speed again and left him with almost two million chips at the end of the day and little to fear (at the start of play at least) from all but Raj Verma. The elusive Sinclair headed off for as early a night as possible, but will be back knowing that he couldn’t have ended three days of play in a much better position to attempt a run on the trophy and £67,000 first prize.
