Final Table
Final Table
UKIPT Edinburgh £500 Main Event Finalists
Seat 1: Jamie Dale – 995,000
Jamie Dale at just 21 is a professional player, although is new on the live tournament scene. He did cash in the Manchester leg of the UKIPT this year, however, and is now guaranteed at least £6,300 for reaching the final table here in Edinburgh. He is already looking forward to UKIPT Dublin in September and the prize money here will fund further buy-ins – the whole of next year’s tour if he takes the title.
Seat 2: Tony Poulengeris – 1,252,000
Tony Poulengeris is a 47 year old property developer from London, playing his second UKIPT event. His route into the game is surely unique – a million pound win on roulette nine years ago spurred him to take up a game with a skill element instead of losing it on chance bets. “Poker isn’t based on chance,” Poulengeris said, “There’s a skill to it. Mind over mind. The money isn’t important to me – it’s all about the title.” Poulengeris goes into the final second in chips and will be facing the TV cameras with little anxiety. “Never worry about your stack size,” was his final piece of advice, “Because things can change as quickly as the next hand.”
Seat 3: Rob Swindells - 677,000
Self-professed ‘Jake Cody fan’ Rob Swindells is by profession a maths teacher from Clitheroe who was able to play UKIPT Edinburgh as it occurs mid-school holidays. Taking any opportunity to play poker around the job he enjoys, he says, “Every game is a learning experience. I love being aggressive – usually people tend to back down. But here and now, I need to adjust. Lots of other people in the UKIPT have this style.” As for his specialist field, he admits understanding the maths of poker with little trouble is useful, but not always beneficial. He recounted a hand to illustrate: “I worked out the maths – it was a fold – and called anyway.” On the way to the final he played and bested many of the top players in this field, doubling through Jeff Duvall early on and then busting Sam Razavi.
Seat 4: George Clyde-Smith – 460,000
UKIPT Edinburgh represents 24 year old George Clyde-Smith’s second event on the tour this year. Having attended university in Newcastle, he tried his first £500 Main Event there but had luck so terrible the 2-outer suckouts stayed with him all the way to Scotland. Here his final table appearance has gone a long way towards letting him forget, although he admits he has no idea how an actual win and the £61,500 first prize would affect his attitude or even his current job as a lettings negotiator. Clyde-Smith enjoys playing live, and on the UKIPT especially due to the good structure of the tournaments and the fact that he has many friends who also follow the tour and add to the uniquely convivial atmosphere to be found around the country.
Seat 5: Fintan Gavin – 2,003,000
Fintan Gavin rose up suddenly from the middle of the pack on Day 2 to take a commanding lead by the final table. His foot seemingly glued to the gas pedal, poker-wise, his unpredictable and fearless playing style combined with a talent for talking have made him one of the stand-out players in this event so far. Gavin, 43, is no stranger to big live events – he’s amassed over $1,250,000 in tournament winnings and is ranked 5th in the Ireland all-time money list. Gavin’s interest in poker also crosses to the other side of the felt: he owns the Eglington Casino in Galway and also organises the Irish Poker Championship which has been sponsored by PokerStars as the Galway leg of the UKIPT for two years. When asked what he would do with another big score, he answered, “Buy shares in Eoghan O’Dea.”
Seat 6: Thomas Ward – 757,000
Thomas Ward might have been nonchalantly noncommittal when asked if he was intending to follow the professional poker route, but at age 24, his high level of experience and confidence suggests such a career might be in the works. Currently multi-tabling tournaments on PokerStars (up to 20 at a time), Ward takes his poker seriously and intends to aim for the top cash spots right from the start. His only previous UKIPT outing (Coventry last year) saw him finish 32nd. Paying close attention to his opponents throughout the event has helped him come out on the right side of several key hands, while a timely AQ vs. 10-10 race on the 3rd level of Day 2 put him in prime position to continue building all the way to the final table. He gave some advice for live (and online) slow-structure players – stay off the beer and eat in moderation in the dinner break to stay focused. However he admits to occasionally playing better when tired, as it stops him “going mental.”
Seat 7: Andrew Hawksby – 509,000
This final table lies at the end of the first deep run in the first big live event that Andrew Hawksby has played. He was on the scene at UKIPT Cork, but stayed in the cash table area. Having taken a stab at the Main Event, he now sits with a shot at a title, yet says that he should still be able to play as if it were a “normal day”. Having benefited earlier from what at first seemed a deadly match-up (QQ vs. AA), his admitted lucky outdraw put him in a position to keep climbing. To win the £61,500 first prize would make a big difference to Hawksby who is at something of a crossroads – professional poker player or accountant. Having graduated from university recently, making this final table straight off the bat gives him a chance at an instant bankroll while the experience itself is valuable. He mentioned an odd omen the morning before the final – his tyre exploded on the way out of the car park. This could mean either that he’s used up his bad luck, or that he’s headed for a blow-up, perhaps.
Seat 8: Craig Brown – 1,008,000
Craig Brown is a 23-year-old apprentice electrician who qualified for this event on PokerStars. Having secured his seat for under £60, he is guaranteed a return of at least a hundred times that. However when asked about the possibility of walking out the champion with £61,500, he said, “I’m trying not to think about that!”
